About Malioboro.com

An independent guide to one famous street and the city around it.

Malioboro.com exists to help you get the most out of Yogyakarta’s main street — not just where it is, but how it works: when to come, what the batik labels mean, which offers to decline, where to eat, and how to use the street as a base for the temples and the volcano.

We are independent. This site is not run by the city government, the Kraton, any shop, hotel or tour company. We do not sell tickets directly or take bookings; for those, use the tour and hotel links, which go to GetYourGuide and Trip.com.

What we cover

  • The street end to end, with its history and the UNESCO-listed axis it belongs to.
  • Shopping, batik and bargaining, with plain advice on touts.
  • Street food, from lesehan and gudeg to kopi joss.
  • The Kraton, Taman Sari and the classic day trips.
  • How to get here, when to come and where to stay.

How we research

Tour ratings, review counts and starting prices come directly from GetYourGuide; hotel scores from Trip.com. Practical details are checked against official sources and recent traveller reports. Malioboro changes often — pedestrian hours, the traders’ markets and opening times have all been revised in recent years — so we hedge where things are in flux and avoid quoting prices we cannot stand behind.

Where we express an opinion, it is an opinion. We tell you when a tour is new and unproven, when a cheap price hides an extra fee, and when something is not worth your time.

How the site is funded

We are a GetYourGuide affiliate partner and a Trip.com partner. If you book a tour or a room through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the only way the site earns money; there is no advertising. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
