Borobudur stands on a hill in the Kedu plain near Magelang, about 40 km north-west of Yogyakarta. Built under the Sailendra dynasty in the 8th and 9th centuries, it is the largest Buddhist monument in the world: nine stacked platforms crowned by a central dome, with well over two thousand relief panels and hundreds of Buddha statues.
Pilgrims walk clockwise up through the galleries, following carved stories of the Buddha’s life, to the open circular terraces where 72 latticed stupas each hold a seated Buddha. Abandoned after the centre of Javanese power moved east, the monument was cleared in the 19th century and restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s and 1980s.
What to see and do: Borobudur
Climb the monument
To protect the stone, access to the structure itself is limited to a daily quota in timed groups, with a guide and special soft sandals provided. These tickets cost more than grounds-only entry and sell out; book ahead or use a tour that includes the climb.
Watch the sunrise
Sunrise is now viewed from nearby hills such as Punthuk Setumbu, with the temple emerging from mist below, before entering the park when it opens.
Add Mendut and Pawon
Two small temples on the same alignment are a few minutes’ drive away; Mendut holds a fine large Buddha statue.
How to get to Borobudur
- By tour or private car: 1–1.5 hours from the Malioboro area, depending on traffic.
- By public bus: Damri buses and local services run to Borobudur terminal from Yogyakarta; allow longer and check current departure points.
Insider tips
- The upper levels are usually closed on Mondays for maintenance; the grounds remain open.
- Bring a hat and water — there is no shade on the monument.
- Dress respectfully; sarongs are lent if needed.
