Jomblang Cave (Goa Jomblang) lies in the limestone hills of Gunungkidul, about 50 km south-east of Yogyakarta. It is a collapsed sinkhole some 50 metres across with a patch of forest growing on its floor.
Visitors are fitted with a harness and lowered about 60 metres by a rope crew, then walk through a muddy tunnel to the neighbouring Grubug Cave. There, around midday on sunny days, light pours through a hole in the roof in solid-looking beams — the “light of heaven”.
What to see and do: Jomblang Cave
The rope descent
You are lowered and hauled up by the crew; no climbing skill is needed, but you should be reasonably mobile.
The light beam
Groups spend up to an hour in the chamber taking photographs while the rays move across the rock.
Combine with Pindul
Many day tours add an easy float on inner tubes through Pindul Cave in the afternoon.
