Mount Merapi (Gunung Merapi, “mountain of fire”) is the smoking cone that closes the view north of Yogyakarta, close to 2,900 metres high and about 30 km from Malioboro. In Javanese cosmology it is the mountain end of the axis that runs through the Tugu, the Kraton and on to the sea.
It erupts frequently. The 2010 eruption killed more than 300 people and buried villages on the southern slope; that landscape of grey lava sand, boulders and regrowing forest is where today’s jeep tours run.
What to see and do: Mount Merapi
Take a lava jeep tour
Open 4x4s leave from bases around Kaliurang and Kaliadem on set routes of different lengths. Typical stops are the Museum Sisa Hartaku — a ruined house with melted household objects — the Kaliadem bunker and the “Alien Rock”, ending with a splash through a river bed.
Go for sunrise
Pre-dawn departures reach a viewpoint as the first light hits the summit. This is also when the mountain is most likely to be clear of cloud.
Visit the volcano museum
The Merapi Volcano Museum on the Kaliurang road explains the mountain’s eruptions with models and footage.
How to get to Mount Merapi
- By tour: most jeep tours include hotel pickup from the Malioboro area, about an hour’s drive.
- Independently: take a taxi or ride-hailing car to a jeep base at Kaliurang or Kaliadem and hire a jeep on the spot.
Insider tips
- Wear clothes you do not mind getting dusty or wet; masks and helmets are usually provided.
- Access depends on the volcano’s alert level. Routes are shortened or closed when activity rises.
- Climbing to the summit has been closed for years because of ongoing activity.
