Sosrowijayan

The backpacker lanes by the station

Sosrowijayan is the kampung wedged between Tugu station and the top of Malioboro. Its main street, Jalan Sosrowijayan, runs west from Malioboro; between it and Jalan Pasar Kembang, numbered alleys (Gang 1, Gang 2…) too narrow for cars are lined with guesthouses.

Since the 1970s this has been Yogyakarta’s original backpacker quarter. It is still the cheapest place to sleep within a few steps of the street, with homestays, small hotels, laundries, bike and scooter rental, cafés and travel desks selling temple tours and onward transport.

What to see and do: Sosrowijayan

Wander the gangs

The lanes are quiet, shaded and lived-in, with murals, caged songbirds and doorstep warungs — a different world from the street fifty metres away.

Arrange your trips

Tour desks here sell shared minibus trips to Borobudur, Prambanan, Merapi and Bromo. Compare what is included; for reviewed options with fixed conditions see our tour list.

Eat and drink cheaply

Small cafés serve travellers’ staples and Javanese home cooking, and several have live music in the evening.

How to get to Sosrowijayan

  • From Tugu station, leave by the south exit, cross Jalan Pasar Kembang and enter any of the numbered lanes.
  • From Malioboro, turn west at the sign for Jalan Sosrowijayan near the northern end.

Insider tips

  • Rooms range from very basic to comfortable; look before you pay, and check for air-conditioning and hot water if you need them.
  • Batik “galleries” in the lanes use the same commission system as elsewhere — see our batik guide.
  • Jalan Pasar Kembang, along the station, has a long-standing red-light reputation at night; the guesthouse lanes themselves are family neighbourhoods.
  • The traveller scene has partly moved to Prawirotaman, south of the Kraton — see where to stay.
