Titik Nol Kilometer — kilometre zero — is the crossroads where the Malioboro axis meets the road to the Kraton’s northern square. The reference point for distances in the city, it is better known as an open-air living room: wide paved corners, stone-ball bollards and benches where students, families and photographers gather at dusk.
Around it stands the best group of colonial-era buildings in Yogyakarta: the General Post Office from the 1910s, the former Javasche Bank (now Bank Indonesia), the white BNI building and, a few steps north, Gedung Agung, one of Indonesia’s presidential palaces.
What to see and do: Titik Nol Kilometer & Gedung Agung
Look at Gedung Agung
Built in the 1820s as the residence of the Dutch Resident and rebuilt after the 1867 earthquake, it became the presidential palace when Yogyakarta was the republic’s capital from 1946 to 1949. It is not routinely open; you view it through the fence. Visits are occasionally possible by prior arrangement.
Photograph the heritage corner
The post office, Bank Indonesia and BNI buildings are floodlit at night. The monument on the north-east corner commemorates the general offensive of 1 March 1949.
People-watch at sunset
This is where the evening promenade down Malioboro ends. Street performers, costumed characters and snack sellers work the corners.
Continue to the Kraton
Straight on to the south lies Alun-Alun Utara and the Kraton, 10–15 minutes on foot.
